WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO GRIEVE THE HOLY SPIRIT?

September 18, 2017

Today we're going to focus on Ephesians 4:30. The Bible says,  "and do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."

What does it mean to "grieve the Holy Spirit?"

My brothers and sisters,  as the body of Christ we  must stop trying to validate our sin and transgressions by saying “that's just me” or “God knows my heart.” That is all fine and dandy, but do you know God’s heart? Do you know God’s character? God hates sin. God does not want you to continue to live apart from his will. God does want you to dwell in sin.

Once you have given your life to Christ you become fellow heirs. Thus, you can not be an heir to a holy kingdom and live apart from it. The Bible declares, “In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?” Galatians‬ ‭4:3, 6-9‬ ‭ESV‬‬

What that means is that you are no longer dead in your trespasses. What that means is that because of the Spirit you will be transformed into the image of Christ, an image that is holy, pure, and blameless. Now that you know God and know God's character you no longer need to serve the needs of the flesh. You now have the freedom to  walk by the Spirit. You are no longer a slave to sin, but a slave to righteousness. You are a servant of the kingdom of God not of this world.

With that being said, I come across a lot of my brothers and sister in Christ who have very flawed character. Now I do not mean that people are perfect because I am imperfect. What I mean is that some of us fester in our sin. We validate our sinful ways and say "that is just me,"  " I didn’t mean any harm," "God knows my heart." They do not accept godly correction from other believers  and are constantly defending sin. Again, do you know Gods heart? Gods character? As believers we must walk by the fruits of the spirit.

You have to ask yourself is it okay to continue to hurt                             people around you, live outside the will of God, remain

slaves to unrighteousness, offend people around

you and hinder your witness all for the sake

of “that's just you?” What you need is a heart check.

That is why believers need to realize that it is no longer “your” heart. It is no longer "your" will. When you GIVE your life to Christ you belong to Christ. It is no Longer YOU who LIVE, but CHRIST who lives in YOU. Galatians 2:20. Giving your life to Christ means denying thyself and taking up your cross. When you give your life to Christ it is no longer your will.

The Bible says, do you not know that                                   your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit

within you, whom you have from God?

This is why when you continue to fester in your sin a.k.a not showing a repentant heart and being disobedient to the Spirit you are GRIEVING the Holy Spirit. You are crucified with Christ so that you died a death for your transgression and you must no longer  walk in them. However, when you who have been crucified with Christ fight against Christ, you are grieving the Holy Spirit.

When you are fighting against the spirit and not submitting to the will of God you are grieving  the Holy Spirit . By fighting the transformation that takes place as a result of inviting Christ into your heart you fight the Spirit. This cause the Spirit to grieve which you were sealed with. You live opposite of God when you continue to walk in debauchery, lawlessness, idolatry, lust, greed, wrath, anger, un-forgiveness and any other spirit that is not of God.  Refusing to follow the lead of the Spirit and being disobedient of the Spirit leads to a life of apathy and spirtual separation from God.

Take the time now to ask God to searcy your heart. Ask God to reveal to you all of the things that are not like Christ. Ask God to baptize you in the Holy Spirit so that you can be transformed into the image of God that you were created in. God does not what us to fester in our sin. God sent Jesus to heal us and that is why we do not have to walk in sin anymore. Living Christ like is how believers do not grieve the Holy Spirit.
