Finding Your Calling?

June 29, 2017

A lot of people finding themselves staring in the mirror wondering what their purpose is.

The definition of purpose says, "the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists." The question then becomes who created me and why was I created? Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." From that scripture alone  you know that you were created by God with roles either male or female.

The Bible also says that we “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them (Ephesians‬ ‭2:10‬ ‭ESV).”

What that means is life is not meaningless. Life is not defined by you, your parents, society, the past, or the random assortment of stars. On the contrary, your unique works were thoroughly planned by God beforehand. Meaning, before you were formed in your mothers womb and before the creation of the world God had a specific plan for you to fulfill. The good and the bad both coming together for the glory of God.  You were created for a specific purpose and God reveals that to each and everyone one of his children. Those good works are why you are given spiritual gifts. Those good works are why Jesus Christ died so that you can have eternal life. Those good works were fearfully and wonderfully created. Those good works is where your purpose is rooted.

Purpose is found out of passions. Specifically those things that you find yourself thinking about in the middle of the night. Purpose derives from your desire to change and affect a certain area in the world were the enemy tried to steal, kill, and destroy God's people. God uses his children in His mission to share Jesus Christ to ever nation, people group, culture etc.

Spending quality time with God and his people you can find out what your purpose is. As children of God our collective purpose is pointing people to God's Lordship. Our role is to love God and love His people. We love our father by obeying his commandments and one of those is sharing Him with others. See Matthew 28.

Often we want to be labeled. We want to be labeled by things that the world deems worthy. Actors, models, rich, entertainers, but how many people are willing to call themselves a servant? When we subscribe our purpose to certain labels we limit our purpose specifically to the place, space and, group of people surrounding us. We limit God.

Sure I went to college to gain a job as a publicists and did that. Sure I joined a sorority. When people asked what I did In college I respond PR. When people ask what sorority I pledged I respond Alpha Kappa Alpha. Thus, certain attributes are  ascribed to me. Certain expectations are associated with me. However, once that mask comes off I am still God's child and those aforementioned labels do not define me. My purpose does not end and begin with my career or sorority. My purpose is rooted in the good works which God prepared beforehand. My purpose is rooted in the image of God for which I was created in.

The Bible says, “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light (1 Peter‬ ‭2:9‬ ‭ESV).” Again, purpose comes from proclaiming the name of Jesus. First we declare Jesus as Lord, then we share that wisdom with others.  God set it up this way for your salvation. God wanted you, and others who have yet come to know Christ as savior to know that it ends and begins with Christ. God set it up this way so that we would not think too highly of ourselves, but instead give credit to our creator, savior, and our life Jesus Christ. Our purpose is rooted in knowing whose we are. We are a chosen race of people who know God. We are a royal priesthood meaning heirs of the kingdom of God, we are a people who are his own possession meaning our lives are not our own, but in God's hands.

‭‭‬‬

Sure you mother and father might both be pastors, but is that YOUR purpose? Sure you might have a family of doctors but is that YOUR purpose? Sure everyone on your family were addicts, but is that YOUR purpose. Sure Christ's father was a carpenter and it is assumed that was his profession as well, but the PURPOSE that God had for him before He formed Him in His mother's women is the Messiah, the King of Kings, Savior, Shepard. So even though the world labeled Jesus as a carpenter because of his family, God's purpose for Jesus was not bound by what he was born into, where he lived, his education, or his job .

Therefore brothers and sisters, your purpose then is rooted in what God had planned for you from the beginning. I am sure you began  to read this hoping I would be able to tell you your purpose. Although you want to believe that you do not know what that is, often times is it very simple. The issue is often you are too busy looking at someone else's purpose and how they are making their mark on the world. You are too busy caught up in trying to build your own destiny and forge your own paths. Or it could be that you choose to turn a blind eye to the voice of God. Even the Bible says, “For many are called, but few are chosen (Matthew‬ ‭22:14‬ ‭ESV).”

‭‭‬‬

There are so many of you out there at the wrong job, serving the wrong purpose, and dealing with warfare because of your dosibediecr to submitting to Gods will. God makes his will very plain. Often, you are too busy focusing on the "works" and not God so you are doing idle work. Those works might not necessarily "bad" but it's not actively fulfilling the purpose for which God created you for. When you do not submit God's will,  those who you are supposed to affect with your gifts and testimony are not receiving help because of your disobedience. Worst of all, when you do not spend time with God at all you can live a life of apathy never being fulfilled. So you have to plug into your source quiet often for fuel.

As a woman who once lived in the world for a long time I  let the world use me and received nothing in return. After years of emptiness I called out to God because I knew there was more than this emptiness. God began to fulfill me with passions to talk to other women who were once me or currently doing what I did. I began to have a passion for speaking to my sisters who were blinded by the enemy and forgot that God is Love. Women who forgot that singles is not a sickness. Women who forgot that we will face trials and tribulations on this earth, but Christ is our strength and refuge. Recently, God gave me  a passion to help others overcome obesity through powerful prayer and biblical meditation.

So for a time PR Served it's purpose in my life, AKA served its purpose in my life, but it was not my calling. For a time those were my labels, but my purpose in both of those institutions remained the same, pointing others to the God who called me out of darkness into His marvelous light.  Do you understand the difference? Those were assignments, but my purpose does not change based off the assignment.

With that being said, I want you to begin to seek God for your specific purpose. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. James 4:8 makes that clear. Take some time to ask God to search your heart. Who are the people around you? What job do you currently have? What do people notice about you?  Do you have a passion for the homeless? Do you have a passion for the special needs? Does you voice lead others? Do you have a passion for justice? Do you have unwavering faith? The ability to heal? This is where God will direct you specifically to your purpose. God will use that brokenes that you experienced to get the glory. God will use your passion in a specific area and mold you to share the love of Christ in that place.  God will use the gifts he bestowed upon you through the Holy Spirit to assist and equip  you for your purpose. God calls all of us. Today is the day to answer.
